Online security is a branch of computer security that deals specifically with Internet-based threats. These include 1) hacking, where unauthorized users gain access to computer systems, email accounts or websites; viruses and other malicious software (malware), which can damage data or make systems vulnerable to other threats; and 2) identity theft, where hackers steal personal details such as credit card numbers and bank account information.

At MetaSchool8 we take online security very serious and for this reason is the MetaSchool8 platform protected by the most up to date and latest technology to ensure online security as far as practically possible. MetaSchool8 makes use of the latest SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) security which is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private and integral. SSL allows sensitive information such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, personal identity numbers and login credentials to be transmitted securely. Normally, data sent between browsers and web servers is sent in plain text—leaving you vulnerable to eavesdropping. If an attacker is able to intercept all data being sent between a browser and a web server, they can see and use that information. This is what SSL prevents.

More specifically, SSL is a security protocol. Protocols describe how algorithms should be used. In this case, the SSL protocol determines variables of the encryption for both the link and the data being transmitted. The 'lock' icon to the left of the url address in the the url field is proof of the SSL certificate protecting all transactions on Each SSL certificate is signed with NIST recommended 2048 bit signatures and provides up to 256 bit encryption of customer data.

Although the MetaSchool8 platform is equipped with the latest technology to limit the chances of data loss / jeopardizing online security, one of the most important aspects to ensure online privacy and security is users' personal awareness of and measures taken regarding online security. Personal passwords is a very important aspect to achieve good and secure online security. Guidelines to create proper passwords are:

  •     Use different passwords, everywhere.
  •     Keep your passwords private.
  •     The longer the password, the better.
  •     Personalize your password.
  •     Be unique.
  •     Change your passwords often.
  •     Watch out for fake password verification notifications.
  •     Watch your back.
  •     Log off when you leave..
  •     Avoid entering passwords on public computers.

For the password itself, the following are good principles to follow: - at least 8 - 15 characters

- uppercase letters

- lowercase letters

- numbers

- symbols, such as ` ! " ? $ ? % ^ & * ( ) _ - + = { [ } ] : ; @ ' ~ # | \ < , > . ? /
